5. Question of the Week

Q: Sometimes your page takes a while to load, yet other times it is quite quick. Is this caused by my browser or your site? Sometimes it loads part and then stops.

A: I have seen these load pauses myself and there is a variety of different reasons that can cause them. Sometimes the internet slows down quite a bit as a whole which is often a problem with the local cable modem provider/ISP. You can see this when yahoo and microsoft also seem to be slow or not loading.

Sometimes it can be a problem with our internet server provider, Servint. (If you sign up to them, tell 'em we referred you) This is uncommon, but happens. You can tell when their site is doing the same thing.

Sometimes it can be a problem with our server. This doesn't happen too much right now, but has happened before. We generally notice this pretty quick and try to fix it.

The most common slow down is caused by the ad companies. The ads are served by another company after our page sends a request for an ad. If that ad company is having a problem, our page waits for a response. That response makes the appearance of the page not loading right away. Waiting a moment and seeing the page load often demonstrates when this occurs.

Our site is optimised for IE 5.5 and 6, so some speed issues can be resolved by downloading the latest version. Overall, we do try to minimize any slowdowns, but sometimes they cannot be avoided. The best solution I can offer is to wait a minute and if nothing still happens, try clicking 'refresh' on your browser. If that doesn't do the trick, we could be doing some sort of update and you may want to try back an hour or so later.
